Service History

Formed in No. 4 Group and became operational in as a squadron June 1941. Most of the squadron was transferred to the Middle East in July 1942 being absorbed into other units upon its arrival. What remained of the squadron in England however was eventually reinforced and continued operationally within No 4 Group until the end of the war

An additional 16 Halifax’s destroyed in non-operational crashes

Carried out more bomber raids than any other Halifax squadron

Dropped Bombed Command’s first 8,000 lbs bomb on Essen 10/11 April 1942

One Halifax flew with an entirely Norwegian crew

Aircrew causalities : 787 killed in action or died of wounds, 278 POW’s, 27 evaders
